The Centre for Art and Visual Media (Zentrum für künstlerische Bildmedien) Sachsen-Anhalt, which later was to become the Werkleitz-Centre for Media Art, was initiated in 1994 by the Werkleitz Gesellschaft. The centre focused on several core activities and projects, next to its more general function as a media lab, where not only the existing production facilities and other resources were available to the public, but also the skills for practical use as well as conceptual realisation of artistic projects could be learned through workshops and other formats. The centre has realised international festivals and other events, of which the Werkleitz Biennale and its successor the Werkleitz Festival have been the largest and most noted productions. With the European Media Artists in Residence Exchange (EMARE), the Supported Artist programme, A38-Production Grant and the Werkleitz-Project Grant it has awarded a scope of grants to individual artists active in the field of contemporary arts and media.

Das Zentrum für künstlerische Bildmedien Sachsen-Anhalt wurde 1994 in Tornitz/Werkleitz von der Werkleitz Gesellschaft initiiert und nach deren Standortwechsel in Werkleitz Zentrum für Medienkunst umgewandelt. Das Zentrum unterstützt professionelle Künstler und Kunstnachwuchs, realisiert und präsentiert Filmkultur und Medienkunst, vom Kurzspielfilm über Dokumentarfilm bis zu interaktiven Installationen und Internetprojekten. Das jährliche Werkleitz Festival, hervorgegangen aus der Werkleitz Biennale, ist eine wichtige internationale Präsentationsplattform für Film- und Medienkunst in den neuen Bundesländern. Das umfangreiche Stipendien- und Förderprogramm European Media Artists in Residence Exchange, A38 Produktionsstipendium, Werkleitz Projektförderung, Supported Artist von Werkleitz unterstützt und vernetzt Einzelkünstler aus dem In- und Ausland. Der Technikverleih im Haus bietet professionelle Ausrüstung für unkommerzielle Film- und Videoproduktionen und steht beratend zur Seite.
